New Jersey’s Statute Requires School Testing

New Jersey now requires that all occupied school rooms that are in contact with the ground, or are above unoccupied basements, must be tested for Radon before the fall of 2005.

The testing must be done using certified Radon measurement persons who must use a certified Radon Measurement Business and a certified Radon laboratory. The individuals performing the field work may be NJ-certified Radon Measurement Technicians, or they may be school district employees who take a one-day training course that is offered at our facilities in Skillman, NJ (near Princeton).

We and Rutgers offer the one-day course. Our schedule is available by calling our offices at 609-466-4399.

The course fee is minimal, and special class arrangements and scheduling ae available for multiple attendees from your school district.

Radiation Data’s Services for School Testing Clients

We offer complete services to NJ school districts. These include the following:
  1. Consulting with the school administration on requirements of the program.
  2. Reviewing all of the school's floor plans.
  3. Determining the number and identity of the rooms to be tested, including multiple tests in large spaces like gyms and auditoriums.
  4. Determining the number of duplicate tests and blanks required by NJ DEP.
  5. Meeting with administrative and teaching staff to explain the program.
  6. Conducting the actual tests, including placement and retrieval of the test kits, and lab analysis. This step includes informing the staff about the tests, and ensuring that they all understand the importance of the program and the need to prevent moving or disturbing the tests.
  7. Preparing and submitting a final report on the project for the administration to use in presenting the results to the public.
  8. Dealing with any problem in cases where the Radon concentration is higher than the government recommendations for remedial action.
  9. Conducting confirmatory tests if the initial screening results are high.
  10. Designing a mitigation plan, if one is needed.
  11. Installing a mitigation system, if needed.

The State Deadline

Under the new law, all testing must be done by the fall of 2005.

This may seem like a lot of time, but it isn’t. We are by far the largest Radon Measurement Business in New Jersey, and one of the 3-4 largest in the country. As of March, 2004, we have already tested about 28 school districts, containing more than 140 individual school buildings. The number of individual rooms tested is approximately 8,000.

It may sound like a lot, but there are 600 school districts in NJ, and the volume of tests required can overwhelm the capacity of our labs to handle it.

School administrators are urged to move ahead quickly to meet this state mandate. If you wait, there are some possible problems: the prices can escalate if the demand exceeds the capacity and you may simply have to wait beyond the fall, 2005 deadline to complete the tests.

Do It Yourself, or Use Professionals?

If you can designate one or more of your staff to become qualified to do the field work (placing and retrieving the tests), you can save as much as half of the total cost of the program. The prices now (approximate, and subject to change) are: For a full discussion of all of the factors involved in the decision of doing it yourself, call us for more information.
